Furnishing the bedroom in a short-term rental apartment

The bedroom is a place to rest after a hard day, so its furnishings and equipment should provide complete comfort. The bedroom should be furnished with the target group of guests you mainly plan to host in the apartment in mind. It should be furnished somewhat differently for families with children, differently for couples and married couples, and differently again for a group of friends.

Are you planning to prepare an apartment for short-term rental and don’t know how to plan the interior design and purchases? See how to furnish the bedroom in your apartment so that it is comfortable and functional.

Preparing the bedroom in an apartment

With an empty, renovated space intended as a bedroom, all you need to do is equip it with furniture and decorative accessories. When planning your purchases, remember that the feel of the bedroom should match the style of the whole apartment – whether it’s Scandinavian, loft, boho or modern. Sticking to one style throughout the apartment creates a coherent, atmospheric whole.

When furnishing the bedroom, consider which group of guests in particular your offer is aimed at (let’s assume we are furnishing the bedroom in a two-room apartment):

  • A family with 1 or 2 children – a bed (approx. 160×200 cm) with space next to it for a travel cot. You can additionally add a single sofa bed or a single bed for an older child in the bedroom. It is also necessary to provide more storage space, so buy a small wall unit or a large wardrobe and at least 2 chests of drawers. In this case, it’s better to focus on the functionality of the room than on decorations.
  • Couples and married couples – a bed with nightstands on both sides. There is no need to provide a lot of storage space – a large wardrobe or a large chest of drawers is enough. You can afford to add decorations or trendy accessories. In addition to functionality, the coziness and atmosphere of the room will matter a lot in this case.
  • A group of friends – a two-room apartment can accommodate 4 people. The living room should therefore have a large sofa bed that sleeps 2 people; then one bed (e.g. 160×200) in the bedroom is enough. If there is no room in the living room, storage space for 4 people should be provided in the bedroom. In this case, you can go wild with trendy, interesting accessories.

The greatest success will be an arrangement of the bedroom and the whole apartment that appeals to all target groups and provides complete comfort for everyone.

Buying a bed for the apartment bedroom

The bed is, of course, the most important thing in the bedroom – it should look nice, but more importantly, it should be comfortable. The size of the bed should be chosen according to the floor area of the bedroom, but also of the whole apartment, and whether there will be a sleeping area in another room or rooms. In addition, it’s worth considering which target group of guests you most want to reach. The most popular bed sizes available in furniture stores are:

  • 140×200 cm
  • 160×200 cm
  • 180×200 cm
  • 200×200 cm
  • 220×200 cm

Besides the size of the bed, a key issue is the right mattress. While we sleep, we rest and our body regenerates, so the mattress affects our well-being and health. The most popular types of mattresses are:

  • Foam – these are flexible and ensure proper body positioning across the entire surface. After being deformed by the body, the foam slowly returns to its original shape when not in use.
  • Spring – these mattresses are made of pocket springs connected to each other by a thin fabric pouch, which makes them adapt perfectly to the shape of the body. In addition, the spine is firmly supported, which is very important for our health. Another advantage is that this mattress is very quiet.
  • Latex – characterized by high durability and flexibility. They adapt very well to the shape of the body, providing great comfort. Latex mattresses have antibacterial and antifungal properties, which is why they are especially recommended for allergy sufferers.
  • When buying a mattress, you should also pay attention to its firmness.

Another issue is buying duvets and pillows. It’s best to buy a duvet that isn’t too warm (or a thin one for summer and a thicker one for winter) and medium-sized pillows. You can also add a few small pillows and a warm blanket for winter. For rental apartments, it’s worth investing in a stain-resistant and waterproof mattress protector. When equipping the bedroom, it’s best to skip colorful bedding and sheets made of satin or seersucker. In rental apartments, white cotton sets work best, as they are easy to wash and iron. Besides, they are comfortable and pleasant to the touch. If the owner wants a splash of color, it’s better to buy colorful decorative pillows, a throw or a bedspread instead of bedding.

Bedroom furniture for an apartment

As we pointed out at the beginning, the amount of furniture depends on the size of the bedroom and the whole apartment, but also on the target group and the number of people who will be staying in the apartment. A married couple with two small children needs three times as much space as a couple on their own.

When choosing furniture, pay attention to its storage capacity. Some furniture seems roomy, but when you open it, it turns out that hardly anything fits inside. The best solution is a large built-in wardrobe with space for hanging and laying out clothes, plus drawers. If that’s not possible, you can buy a smaller wardrobe and a chest of drawers separately. If possible, nightstands with drawers for small items can be placed next to the beds.

What accessories should you choose for the bedroom?

Functionality is one thing, but the look of the bedroom matters a great deal. In addition to the essential furniture and accessories, you can buy accessories that will give the room the right atmosphere, style and coziness:

  • ceiling lighting and possibly a floor lamp, bedside lamps,
  • roller blinds and possibly sheer curtains or drapes,
  • a wall-mounted or freestanding mirror,
  • a dressing table with a stool and a mirror,
  • a rug or several small rugs,
  • an armchair with a small side table,
  • candles and knick-knacks,
  • an alarm clock and a clock.
